Our Vision
At Bill Buchanan Association for the Aged, our mission is to provide a secure, comfortable and loving environment for the elderly who are fit or frail and who have been unable to cater adequately for their retirement needs. We aim to provide an environment that supports their physical, emotional and social needs.
Our sister NPO Fortune Foods is operated for the sole benefit of Bill Buchanan Association and their residents.
Bill Buchanan offers a variety of accommodation. Let's begin with Bill Buchanan House; our first 7 storey building built in 1970. Bill Buchanan House is located at
1 Goodwin Drive, Morningside. The 6th + 7th floors were converted to ensuite units and are sold as Life Rights; we currently have a total of 28 rooms.
Due to the success of the above renovations, the committee decided to renovate the third and fourth and fifth floor in a similar manner.
At present full board and lodging is available for 202 residents, with a fully furnished lounger and laundry room on each floor.
Emmerson House built in 1982, also situated at 1 Goodwin Drive offers single, double and 4 bedded rooms with full board and lodging for 57 frail aged residents. Residents are provided with 24 hours nursing care by qualified nursing staff and nursing aids.
A portion of the 2nd floor, 3rd and 4th floors are known as Bill Buchanan Annex,
which houses independent residents. As the 2nd floor has been newly renovated,
interviews are being conducted to those interested.
Bill Buchanan Annex has a total of 55 rooms.
Helen Gibling Gardens was built in 1963 situated on lower Burman Drive, Morningside. There are 47 quaint self-catering flats for married couples.
Arcadia, also built in 1963 which is situated on the Bluff, is a peaceful haven.
Offering 7O self-catering cottages for married couples and 26 flatlets for single
women. Arcadia has a total of 114 residents The single women in this complex
receive a reduced rental in that their rental does not include the cost of
electricity. This is paid by Bill Buchanan Association.
Benson Place located in Rapson Road, Durban was built in 1960. Benson Place is comprised of 7 buildings, including a community hall.
Millar Court is a 3-storey block that accommodates for 45 single women.
Margaret Court, the original house, has been converted into 6 separate flats
for married couples.
Eve Court, Gladys Court, Lilla Court and Clare Court each has 12 units and
caters for married couples or single residents.
Each complex is under the care of a supervisor who is responsible for the
administration and well-being of the residents. All complexes are visited on a regular basis by a qualified nursing sister, who is assisted by three nurse aids.
The residents in these "district" complexes are given priority for admissions to either Bill Buchanan House or our full care home; Emmerson House.
